Neuro Night Product Review
There is so much good advice out there on ways to improve your sleep. They all make a big difference to sleep onset time, quality of sleep (length of deep sleep and REM sleep) and uninterrupted sleep, but very often, we need a little extra help.
The bad rap that sleeping pills get though cannot be ignored. There are estimates that around one in seven people suffer from insomnia, and especially as we age, falling asleep becomes harder and harder. So, it’s completely understandable that people look to sleeping pills to help them sleep. Especially during short periods of trauma. However, given the chance of dependency and the serious side effects, compounded by the fact that studies show that they rarely assist with sleep quality, wouldn’t a natural alternative to sleeping pills be first prize?!
The good news is that there are a number of amazing natural alternatives that are not only as or more effective than sleeping pills but are also completely safe to use and there’s no dependency risk.
There are quite a few of these natural sleep aids. Some target falling asleep easier (like melatonin, the natural sleep hormone) and others target ensuring that you stay asleep (because is there anything worse than waking up at 3am and just lying there, counting the minutes until you need to get out of bed?!).
Neuro Night by NeuroActive for Advance Sleep Support is a complex and innovative all-natural nootropic supplement that targets restful and restorative sleep. But so do a lot of sleep supplements, right?
This product review looks at the ingredients in Neuro Night, what people say about using this product and finally my experience of the product based on how it worked for me and my Oura ring scores.
As mentioned, melatonin is the sleep hormone. While it doesn’t really aid your sleep per se, it does signal to your body that it is time to sleep. That’s why blue light at night is so detrimental: it blocks the secretion of melatonin and your circadian rhythm then misses the signal that it’s time to get ready for sleep. The result: not feeling sleepy when you should be getting ready for bed! Including low-dose melatonin in this supplement is a really powerful way to signal to your body that it’s time to shut down and get ready for bed!
- Lithium Orotate
Often thought of as a treatment for bipolar disorder, lithium is actually a natural element (think back to the periodic table) which is freely found in nature. However, it is often inadvertently filtered out of water and as such we lack the natural levels that were previously found in natural drinking water.
The difference between lithium for pharmaceutical use (which has some side effects) and natural lithium found in water and tomatoes etc, is the DOSE. For pharmaceutical use, you require a super pharmacological dose, anything from 300mg to 1,800mg. To get even 15mg naturally, you’d need to eat 30 tomatoes! So, supplementing in small, natural doses (1mg in this instance) is perfectly safe and has a really beneficial impact on mood, brain health and sleep!
Lithium orotate is a natural, side effect-free mineral which is very helpful in regulating circadian rhythms and your sleep-wake cycle. What this means practically in a supplement like Neuro Night is that it helps you wind down for sleep and also keeps you asleep!
- Magnesium Glycinate
By far the superior form of magnesium in my view, magnesium glycinate is a form of magnesium that has a potent calming effect, especially due to the glycine that it is bound to, which is an amino acid with calming properties.
Magnesium glycinate is transported through the intestinal wall, so it’s not going to give you the laxative issues that other forms of magnesium can have. On top of that, it has high bioavailability, making this an ideal form of magnesium. The only constraint is that it’s a relatively pricey form of magnesium.
Glycine on its own has a calming effect on our neurotransmitters, and magnesium glycinate is therefore the gold standard for sleep.
I also think that the magnesium component in this supplement is the reason why some people will feel a much more intense effect (sooner) from Neuro Night than others: if you are already deficient in magnesium, supplementing with magnesium glycinate is going to have a very profound and noticeable impact on your sleep almost immediately.
- Magnesium L-Threonate
Magnesium L-Threonate is again a highly available form of magnesium and popular for both cognitive enhancement as well as sleep promotion and therefore a great addition to this supplement as it complements the magnesium glycinate very well.
- Amino Acids
Amino acids are the most popular aids for sleep in the natural health and wellness world right now. And quite rightly so: the research on their effect on sleep is overwhelmingly positive.
In Neuro Night, both L-Theanine and Taurine have been included. Amino acids are simply the building blocks of protein, so they are completely safe and natural and pack a major punch when it comes to sleep! They are able to work on our neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) that play a role in sleep.
L-Theanine assists with helping us relax before bedtime, fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply (the important sleep stage at the beginning of sleep that’s vitally important for both physical and mental recovery).
Taurine aids in calming anxiety levels as it supports GABA, a very important neurotransmitter involved in allowing the brain to shut down. It therefore encourages rest, which is why it’s very useful in Neuro Night: you need to wind down effectively in order to have quality sleep.
Neuro Night contains three of the best nootropics known for calm, relaxation and sleep. They have been used for this purpose for literally centuries. These are Ashwagandha, Bacopa Monnieri and Gotu Kola.
Ashwagandha is undoubtedly the adaptogen that seems to have the most clinical research on it for anything from lowering cortisol to sleep. It is a massively popular adaptogen for its calming properties and there are impressive studies which point to its sleep-inducing potential but more importantly, it’s ability to improve sleep quality and reducing the time that it takes you to fall asleep (sleep latency), even in patients with insomnia.
Bacopa Monnieri, also known as Brahmi, has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine as a memory and learning enhancer and sedative. Because it helps to lower stress and anxiety levels (often associated with poor or insufficient sleep), Brahmi is a common herb used to help people sleep at night.
Gotu Kola is associated with its ability to treat anxiety, stress and depression, and is therefore used in cases of insomnia that are related to these conditions. It regulates GABA to achieve this, and has been shown to be very effective in this regard. It also improves circulation and reduces cortisol.
What do Users Say?
Scouring the reviews on this product are rather impressive. Users report undisturbed sleep where they previously struggled, that it help with restless leg syndrome and that it helps with insomnia, which impacts people so negatively if they suffer from it! However, what the majority report and what is really impressive is that they fall asleep calmly and peacefully, and without fail everyone reports waking up feeling refreshed and alert.
Many people can attest to the fact that waking up after using sleeping pills leaves you groggy or confused. So, I think that all users report waking up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day is a massive endorsement for this product!
My Experience of Neuro Night
I have used this product for over three months now and I’m completely sold on it! Its efficacy lasts, i.e. I haven’t found that as my body has gotten used to it, it becomes less effective. That’s a massive benefit as it means you don’t have to keep increasing the dose!
I take it 30–60 minutes before I want to go lights out. It’s not a feeling of drowsiness that is being created, but rather a feeling of calm and wellbeing, like I’m being lulled to sleep in a natural way, not a pharmaceutical way. Simply put, like I’m falling asleep as nature intended as opposed to being medicated to sleep. It’s a really lovely feeling!
My Oura ring, which I use to track my sleep, seems to agree. I track religiously and I can see a noticeable difference when using it for a couple of weeks versus not taking Neuro Night for a week or two. This is measured in three ways for me: (1) the time it takes to fall asleep, (2) length of deep and REM sleep and (3) measurement of restfulness.
The Oura ring shows improvements on all three metrics when using Neuro Night. If you’re pedantic about sleep like me, that’s massive! For me personally, it is particularly my deep sleep that benefits the most. And for a restless sleeper like me, seeing my restlessness score improve is so encouraging. I never feel groggy in the evening or in the morning from using it, and I find that it just supports my sleep rhythm and the other things that I do to improve my sleep in a very safe and natural way.
I absolutely love this product and highly recommend it to anyone for superior sleep quality!
